Mitsubishi Repair: battery and brake light, mitsubishi diamante, ground cables

Question
hello I have a mitsubishi diamante 1998 and my battey light and brake light keep coming on while I drive I change out the starter what could it be ????

Answer
If the battery light is on, you need to check the charging system voltage. If you don't have over 13 Volts then you have a problem. Anything under ~13V will cause the light to come on.  The brake light isn't directly controlled by the alternator but both are turned on by a small ECU, which on many vehicles will apply both lights to get your attention. Many won't care about the battery light, but WILL have it checked out if the brake light comes on.  I wouldn't be dealing with the brake light (although you should just check to see that the fluid is at the right level, and that the brake light get's BRIGHTER when the emergency brake is applied- that will ensure that it is not a real brake problem).  Monitor battery voltage with the meter and note the voltage level when the light comes on. If the voltage level drops, you have a real problem. If the light illuminates and voltage is higher than 13V,then it's a wiring or computer problem.  If this started occuring right after the starter was installed, I would verify that my ground cables from the negative terminal of the battery to the engine block and chassis are all good, along with a good, clean connection at the positive terminal as well.
