Mitsubishi Repair: Only Starts in Neutral, mitsubishi galant, old hope

Question
I have a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant a yesterday I stopped & turned my car off. When I got back into the car and attempted to turn it on it wouldn't. On my first attempt the key turned & nothing happened. The brake pedal got stiff & wouldn't allow me to press down on it. Also the gear shifter would not come out of "Park". I was attempting to start it in neutral. When I finally got the car in neutral and after quite a few attempts, the car did turn over while in neutral. The problem reaccures each time I turn it off & will only come in while in neutral. What could this be? And is it going to be costly.

Answer
David: I would have the car coded to rule out any problem with the computer or a sensor. Then I would have the transmission switch checked, the one that controls what the transmission has to be in for you to start the car. I would say there is a bad switch in there causing your problem. If the car shifts ok, and everything else works ok. I would say it should not be to costly but again with that said. I don't know what area you live in and what the costs for things are there. Best get it fixed though, because it will get worse. And oh hey look on the bright side of things your car is not the old. Hope this helps and God bless: Linda
