Mitsubishi Repair: starter relay, blown fuse, starter relay

Question
QUESTION: Where is the starter relay on a 95 Mitsu Eclipse GS (manual)?

ANSWER: Trevor: Go to a parts store and buy youself a repair manual for your car, they cost around $20.00 well worth the money. But as you open the hood of your car,  looking at the engine, there should be three black boxes, one up on the firewall on the driver's side of the car, two more over on the other side or one might be around the battery. In those boxes are relays and larger fuses. Sometimes to check the relays you will need a good flashlight as to shine through the relays because sometimes they are hard to check. Before you remove the relay from one of those boxes, take the neg cable off the battery, if you need a new relay get it, put it in and then replace the cable. Other wise you will be doing it all over again, because you will blow the new relay. On the tops of each of those boxes will tell what is in each box. But if you are going to work on your car, you need that repair manual too. Hope this helps and God bless: Linda

QUESTION: I have a manual (both a technical service manual and Chilton's manual) and quite honestly they are both way off when i'm looking for certain parts in the car (like the starter relay).  they are also often wrong in describing things as well.  so when finding to find the source of blown fuse they are almost useless.  My car must be a one of a kind or something because no diagram I have found matches this car.  Anyways all the relays I have found are still in working condition, the other option you gave me was coding the computer to see if it could be a faulty model, how do I do that exactly?  thanks.

ANSWER: Trevor: Got an AutoZone close by? Some will code your car for free. Some say they don't do older cars. So then you will have to find a shop to do this. Or you can go to Sears or someplace like that; to buy a meter that will hooked to your car's computer. But then check with those repair manuals I use Haynes as they are just a better manual. Less cars, such as for your car the Haynes would have cars from 1995 through 1998, that if you wanted to say replace an engine you could do that with any year from 1995 through 1998 as they are all the same. Could be your car was owned by someone that just changed things to suit themself. Did a lot of rebuilding things and so now you have the car, nothing really works from those manuals for this reason. Anyway, to code the computer... you would hook your car's computer into another computer at an AutoZone, a shop or buy that costly meter from Sears or someplace else. Either way a code will be kicked out, to let you know what or how the computer of the car is reading the system. Now my question to you... how did you decided your problem was the relay to the starter? How old is the battery? Are the cables good on the battery? How old is the starter? Are you sure it is hooked up right? How does the wiring look on it? Sometimes to hooked up a starter you almost have to stand on your head? So at times things might not get hooked up right? If you got that AutoZone close by, I know they would test your starter for your car for free. To might sure it is doing its job.Hey trying looking for that starter relay under the dash, on the driver's side of the car. Also remember that the clutch has to be depressed or the transmission has to be in park, which one you have for the starter to even do its job. So listen keep me posted on this, I would like to know what you find out about this car. I got a brother that likes to change cars around, rebuilds things and what not. I always remind him that some day that car will be sold and then what. Ah but he just winks at me. lol. Still hope this helps some and God bless! Linda

QUESTION: I sent you an email a little earlier last week about the 30A starter fuse blowing immediately when the car starts. Everything runs and ran perfectly and tests out perfectly.  And the whole wire connected to that fuse seems to be in great condition, absolutely no evidence of grounding.  I've traced this wire to various fuses and everything checks out (including the supposed starter relay). The car actually starts (it just dies immediately afterwards) so it isn't the starter, and the alternator was tested and it works as well.  So I guess the only thing left is the computer? which means i have to find a way to tow the car and get it tested....
thanks again for the quick replys, this car is really getting on my nerves lol.

Answer
Trevor: Oh another person that wrote to me, pointed out my forgetfulness, maybe you did not know this but Mitsubishi farmed out the building of their computers to another company and that company did not make very good ones. A piece in the computer will start to leak into the computer and with time it will kill off the computer. Now this leaking shows up in many ways, and I am sorry I just never thought that this might be a bad computer. But it sure could be that, as your car is the right year and model for these bad computers. Now you will have to either have the computer to your car rebuild or buy a new one. Do not go to a junk yard and buy a used one. I have had more people do this and it does not work. Because you need the right computer to go with your car and its make up. So I really do hope this works for you and you are zipping down the roads in no time. Oh hey the Bible says grey hair is a sign of wisdom and you should see all my grey hair. So hang in there things will get better I am sure. Thank now...God bless: Linda
