Mitsubishi Repair: 3000 gt smoking, valve seals, piston rings

Question
I have a 95 3000 gt non turbo 5 speed fwd v6 it starts and runs fine. However if I let it idol for a short period of time when I drive off a puff of white smoke comes out of the exhaust even if I have been driving for a while. My mechanic said I should have a engine cleaning done for $100.00 called Zoom, I cant imagine this would work. Any ideas why it would smoke this way?thanks!!

Answer
Greg,
Your intuition is correct.  An engine cleaning will do absolutely nothing to prevent the white smoke.  I would recommend finding a new mechanic.

The white smoke is probably burning oil.  The oil is probably leaking past the valve seals or piston rings and burning up in the combustion chamber and then blowing out the exhaust.  Check your oil level.  If you're burning through more than a quart of oil every 1000 miles, then you should consider getting a head rebuild.  It's a pretty expensive procedure, so be sure you really want to get it done before you commit to have it done.  Your car will probably be down for a couple days and it can cost anywhere from $800-$1800 depending on parts and labor involved.
Good luck!
