Mitsubishi Repair: 95 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS intermittent no start, valve cover gasket, coolant fluid

Question
2 weeks ago took it to the shop as it was "running rough" and had two intermittent "no starts."  It would crank, just no start.  after sitting for awhile it would start.  Shop replaced spark plugs and wires, fuel filter, valve cover gasket, pcv valve and hose.  Made it home with car running like a champ, went to leave approx 6 hours later, no start (same day I picked it up from the shop).  Once again it would crank.  Left if over night, while waiting for tow truck tried to start it again and it started.  Drove it to the shop.  It started every time they tried.  They kept it for a week with no luck. Brought car home and it worked good for a couple days then it died on me while sitting at a stop light, then once again no start.  It did crank.  Towed it to shop, the car started right when they got it off the truck and continued to do so all week. They ended up replacing the crank position sensor.  Car started every time for a week. Then today it started it and it idled for two minutes and died.  Wouldn't start, but still cranked.  I let it sit with the key in off position for 15 minutes and tried to restart car several times with no luck, then left key in on position (just before cranking position) about two minutes later, I heard a clunk from under hood and felt shift of car.  All lights (check engine, engine coolant fluid level) all came on and car started right up.  Before this noise the only light on the dash was the oil lamp light.  I'm a broke college student with no other means of transportation living in So Cal alone, just to go to school.  My shop is completely stumped.  Any ideas as to where to go next with it.  I am looking into getting the computer replaced, but I notice the two stickers under the hood.  One showing a replacement computer placed 1996 and one in 2003.  My car was manufactured Aug 1994.  This doesn't seem like a good sign.  I am desperate.  Thanks for any ideas you may have.  By the way, hope you enjoyed your vacation.

Answer
Candie: Hey yes I did enjoy my vacation if you can call that. I helped my son pack for his move, worked on my old motorcycle, worked on getting paint off the garage so we can paint it and the list goes on. A vacation to rest? No but still enjoyable. :~) Well have you have had your car coded? To see if things is kicked out there. Might be a bad sensor or yes it would be that computer. But if it has to be keep being replaced now that is a wonder. I am heading off right now, but I shall write again after a bit of check on the interent tonight. Yet, are these computers that whoever replaced them, are they new computers or used ones? As a poor college student and I have been in your shoes so I know what you mean. You might have just give up on this car and find something else. If the computer were used, that might be your problem. You need to make sure that the right computer goes with the right engine and car. People will often write to say they just replaced the computer from another car or they bought one at the junk yard. Works ok, for a while but then bang their problems come back. A new computer for your car is going to be costly. A 1995 do you want to put that much money back into this car, given the problems you are having. I know, I know people are often than not hooked on their cars. I know I have a husband like that. But still you need to check the cost and see what you think. It does sound like the computer or even a sensor or two someplace. My son had a car like your's but he gave up on it and traded it for another car. Have you checked all the relays that are in those boxes under the hood? As it could be that a relay is getting weak, as you wrote that all the lights all came on and the car started right up. You must have a large short someplace in that car, that the wire touches and then not, then works again. Have you taken a voltmeter around the car to see if everything is getting all the power it need? Well have your shop check all those relays and large fuses in those boxes, there should be three boxes, one on the firewall over on the driver side of the car and two more on the other side by the battery. Again I got to go but I shall check into this and write you again. If you like you could write me at my email address which is (oppedal50@yahoo.com).  Also you know that Mitsubishi farmed out the building of their computers to another company and this company did not build very good ones. With time a piece will start to leak into the computer and it will with time kill off the computer. Now if all those computer that were replaced where from this company, then the computer is most likely your problem. Once you get to the computer, sometimes you can smell the computer as kind of a burnt smell.Hope this helps some and good luck! Linda
