Mitsubishi Repair: Grinding Gears, grinding gears, bearing retainer

Question
Gearshift is beginning to jump out of 2nd, on my 93 standard shift Eclipse, and is for some strange reason, more pronounced in doing so when making a left turn. It was occasional at first, but is happening more frequently. I must slam stick into 2nd gear or it will jump out or grind the gears and not go in.

Is this the end of my gearbox? Do I have to replace it, or is this possibly a fluid problem or any other easy fix?

Car has 164,000 miles on it and I love it. No transmission work except to change the clutch.

Answer
Tom: How long ago did you put the clutch in? Sometimes it takes a while for those clutches to seat themselfs. Ok, this is right out of my repair manual... as the trouble being that it slips out of gear. Worn or improperly adjusted linkage. Transaxle loose on engine, shift linkage does not work freely, binds., input gear bearing retainer broken or loose., dirt between clutch cover and engine housing., worn shift fork. So there are some ideas to check. I hope this helps some and good luck! ~Linda~
