Mitsubishi Repair: Oil Leak, leak oil, oil leak

Question
Hello Linda,

I own a 1998 Eclipse RS, and it has a strange oil leak. After getting an oil change, the car is completely fine, no leaks at all. However, after about 1,000 miles or so, the car starts to leak oil leaving puddles where ever its parked. Then, I get another oil change and the car is fine again, until it's driven to about 1,000 miles. It starts to leak again. I really don't understand what's wrong.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Answer
Khan: I would have the gasket of the oil pan checked it might be weak and starts to leak once the oil gets old. Or older. The other place you could check is the valve cover gaskets too. They do get weak and with time must be replaced. Could be whoever is changing your oil does not get the oil pan bolt tight and so it loosens up enough to make the car leak. I had a car once that where the bolt went into the pan was bent so it would not tighten as it should and with time it would start to leak. Another idea would be that the oil filter is not being put on tight enough and it starts to leak. These are only idea but I hope they help. Good luck now! ~Linda~
