Mitsubishi Repair: 1990 Mitsubishi Montero No Spark, volt ohmeter, crankshaft position sensor

Question
Linda,

I'm trying to troubleshoot a 1990 Montero that wouldn't start after driving to the store and turning off the ignition. It cranks fine so the first thing I checked was to see if It had spark.  I get one arc at the coil when the key is first turned then nothing unless I turn the key off and crank the engine again...

I've tested the coil and the module that sits by the coil and those parts test fine.  I have also tested the ECM from the scan cable harness using an analog volt/ohmeter by putting the leads on the bottom left and top right pins.  The needle sweeps to the right and comes back very very slightly.

According to everything I've read if the needle moves to the right without a bounce or return means a bad ECM...does this very tiny (maybe 1/32 inch) return to the left mean the ECM is ok or bad?

I'm trying to make 100% sure that the ECM is the problem before I buy an rebuilt one because they are very expensive.  Also, is there a crankshaft position sensor or cam position sensor that could be the problem?

Thanks for your time.

Answer
Thomas: When it the last time you did a good tune up on this car? I am talking stark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. You know don't you that in the distributor is a crank sensor. So before doing the computer try the tune up and see if that helps you. I know those darn computers are very costly.Keep my posted on this. Hope this helps and good luck! ~Linda~
