Mitsubishi Repair: 2001 galant camshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, mitsubishi galant

Question
Hello! i own a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant, automatic 4.0 cylinder. The check engine light is on and I will turn on my car and it stays on for about 3 seconds and then the engine turns of. The light and radio and everything works so I knew it wasn't the battery. I went into Auto Zone and the did the little diagnostic test on it and came out with the code P0340. They said that means the Camshaft Position Sensor needs to be replaced. My dad is going to replace it for me but we can't locate where it is. (my dad or the guys at auto zone) I looked in an auto repair manual for 1994 to 2003 but the picture was totally off of what my car(engine) looks like. Would you know where I can find the camshaft position sensor so we can replace it? and also I have been looking online for help but I can't find any direction, pictures anytrhing! please help!
Thank you!

Answer
Lauren: I repair older cars than your's. But in the older cars the camshaft position sensor is in the distributor. I think someone wrote to me once and said the newer cars do not have a distributor but I don't know at what year they stopped putting those in. Still using your repair manual, with your dad's help well even the guys at AutoZone if your car does not have the distributor, you should be able to find out what took the place of it. And where would be your sensor. You would have to replace that part. Or if your car still has the distributor than you need to replace that and at that time I would replace the rotor too. Hey, keep me posted on this too. I hope this helps and good luck! Linda
