Mitsubishi Repair: is my engine ok, mitsubishi galant, timing belt

Question
While I was driving my 2001 Mitsubishi Galant the timing belt broke. I had got a new timing belt and had my uncle(he worked on cars his whole life but never got schooling for it)put it on. He tells me unfortunitly when the timing belt broke it damaged your engine, now you need a new engine. I talked to a schooled mechanic and he told me there is a chance it was put on wrong and i should have it rechecked. The car starts but shuts off when put into gear. Is my engine broke? Sorry so long.

Answer
Brian: In most cases when the timing belt goes, while driving the car. It takes the valves. But am always tell people to rebuild the engine they have and not get another one. Unless you buy a new one. Because if you go to a junk yard and buy an engine; you have no idea how that person took care of that engine. But you know how you took care of your's. I would say you will have to replace the valves. Though till someone opens up the engine they really don't know what damage was done. It could be not much or a lot. But I don't agree with your Uncle and the school mechanic is right to a point. Still you will not know till you open up that engine. But fix the one you have, in that rebuild what you have and don't buy another engine. Well that is my idea. Will you keep me posted on this.  Hope this helps and good luck! Linda
