Mitsubishi Repair: running problems, spark plug wire, cam gears

Question
QUESTION: Hello Linda, I just recently bought a used eclipse that I had to replace the motor head on. We got everything put on and the car ran fine. One day the car started acting weird.I only starts up if I take the positive cable off the battery. I used a USBD 2 tool and found that the cam postion sensor is malfunctioning. Does this problem seem to fit in with what I just said?

ANSWER: Dominick:Got to say I never heard of such a thing, but things happen with these cars everyday. Sometimes we know the reason behind the happenings and other times we don't. I would get that cam postion sensor. As I was going to say it has to be something with your sensors or the computer. You do not put what year this car is. Look that sensor is in the distributor cap, but when replacing that, I would do the rotor, spark plugs and wires. You could have a spark plug wire that is broken and therefore the stark that should go into that wire or some of it is moving to other parts of your engine. You could get a repair manual for your car and a voltmeter; (Sears sells some nice voltmeters). Then using the repair manual and the voltmeter, check the engine area out to see what kind of readings you get with that voltmeter, that might explain the reasons behind the car starting once you remove that pos.cable. But mean while I would do that tune up too. Hope this helps and good luck! Linda

QUESTION: Sorry I forgot to mention that the year is a 1995 GSX. By any chance would you know how to install the cam angle sensor. I heard there is a short cut so I wouldn't have to take off the timing belt. I heard I could zip tie the belt to the cam gears but I'm lost from this point on, thanks for the help again. Dominick

Answer
Dominick: You have to be talking about some other sensor then the cam angle sensor, because that sensor is in the distributor cap and you only need to replace distrbutor cap to replace that sensor. It has nothing to do with the timing belt. Are you sure you are calling whatever sensor is out by the right name? Linda
