Mitsubishi Repair: Overheating, magna wagon, mitsubishi magna

Question
Hi,

I have a 1993, Mitsubishi Magna wagon(automatic) that seems to be having overheating problems. It usually shows a high temperture indication (approaching redline), and bubbling in the coolant reservoir after shutdown. Just last night, coolant started bubbling out of the breather tube onto the pavement. Radiator level is ok, coolant in reservoir seems to be ok(low level when cold...not too sure if this is correct).
I have been able in the past to drive for weeks without a high temp indication, it is almost a sporadic occurrence. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
Stanley,
Check to see if your radiator fans come on when the engine temp gets high.  Also see if they come on when you turn on your A/C (if so equipped).  Four common causes for overheating are insufficient coolant level, improper coolant mixture, stuck thermostat, and worn out water pump.  You should have a mechanic inspect all of those.  If it's been more than 60,000 since you last had a timing belt change, you may want to consider that to be done, along with having them replace the water pump.  Having the proper level and mixture of coolant, and having a properly working thermostat are very easy (and relatively inexpensive) to service and replace.  Having a mechanic replace your water pump can cost your a few hundred dollars, but it's worth it.

If you continue to drive your car with it overheating so much, it will eventually wear out your head gasket, and possible warp the head itself.  And if you wait until that happens, it may end up costing you a couple thousand dollars to repair.  So bring your car to a mechanic ASAP.
Good luck!
