Mitsubishi Repair: 2000 eclipse oil light, oil pressure sender, engine bearing

Question
We are purchasing a 2000 eclipse 4 cyl with 63,000 miles for my son. At idle the oil light comes on. When you increase the RPMs the light goes out. Is this a major concern. Also is there anything else we should be checking or future problems we might expect with this car

Answer
Bill: Might try changing the oil. A lot of places are putting 5w/30 weight when changing oil in cars. Some cars run just fine on this and others do not. Might try putting 10w/30 and see if that helps. Out of my Mitsubishi repair manual... oil light coming on... low oil level, short in wiring circuit, faulty oil pressure sender and worn engine bearing and/or oil pump. Look I always try to fix things with the easy things first and then work into the hard ones. So why not try the oil change with the heavier weight oil and see if that helps. If you take the car someplace to have this done, make sure to tell the shop that you want 10w/30 oil in the car or they will put in that 5w/10 weight. Oh they will try to talk you into the lighter weight but hold your ground. Oh also when you are idling the car, the engine is not making noise is it? Like knocking, or sounding bad. I mean all engines make noise when they run. But you know a smooth sound to a bad sound. Or when you give the car RPMs as the light goes out, the engine is not knocking or anything like that. Right? Ticking sound? The thing is if the engine is just running nicely like your car, then I would say it is something wrong with the oil light or the oil weight but not the oil pump. Does the car use oil? What color is the smoke something out the exhaust? I would have the car coded, AutoZone will do this for free and it would rule out any problems with any of the sensors or computer. Also keep the car tuned up, oil change at every 3000 miles and future problems would be that you will never see your son. Because he will enjoy driving this car so much, he will not want to get out of it. lol. Hope this helps and good luck! Linda :o)
