Mitsubishi Repair: 85 Mitsu Mighty Max Main seal, mighty max, voltmeter

Question
I was  just given an '85 Mighty max with a main seal leak (not sure if I should thank them or curse them) and the ECA light on.  Are these repairs that I can make myself, or should I shop the work out?  And how much do you estimate a respectable shop would do the work for?  thanks

Answer
Michael: Before you can write a bad report on me, let me tell you; most of what I answer these questions from is a repair manuals, asked others who work on cars and check the Internet. But I am sorry there is really no way for me to tell you what this will all cost you at a shop, because different areas are different. If you have tools, a garage, jack stands and know your way around working on a car or a truck; then you should be able to do the main seal. Yet the truck is a 1985 and so it might be better to take it to a shop. Because it will be rusty and maybe hard to get that main seal apart to replace the seal. The light on the other hand, you have an AutoZone close by? They will code your truck for free and it should explain what is going on with that light. As I would guess you have a sensor or more out someplace. True you might want to curse them for giving you the truck, but it did not cost you any money and therefore you should be able to put some into it; to keep it on the road. These Mighty max trucks are fun to drive, with the cost of fuel should help you there and I like having a truck around to drive. Only in my case it is a 1988 GMC pick-up. You best call around your area and check out shops. Do check more than one, to get the best cost if you decide not to do this yourself. You could get a repair manual for your truck at any parts store for around $20.00 and would well be worth the money. If you do not have an AutoZone close by, with that repair manual and a voltmeter, you could check your truck to find out what sensor is out. The repair manual would tell you the right readings that you should be getting from the voltmeter. And Sears sells some very nice ones for not much money. I do hope this helps, but I best let you know, I am not a male but a female. I have been working on cars for 40 years now. I do hope this helps you and good luck!
