Mitsubishi Repair: cooling fans, coolant temperature sensor, amp fuse

Question
I just bought a 1994 eclipse with the 1.8. The cooling fans did not work at all. I found that the 40 amp fuse at the battery was missing. I replaced that, still no work. Fans would not come on even with a/c clutch. found that cooling fan relay was missing. replaced that and now fans will come on with a/c clutch, they do not come on with high coolant temp (I let it boil over. opps)how ever with the key off the fans run all the time at a very slow speed. even with the relay pulled out the fans run at a very slow speed with the key off, have to pull the fuse to get them to stop. missing fuse mystery solved!! can you point in the direction of a fix? thanks Travis.

Answer
Travis,
There sounds like there's a short somewhere in the fan circuit.  Though you can check to make sure the fans are ok by applying a 12v source directly to the fans to see if they can actually come on full speed (be careful checking this, those plastic blades can easily break a finger if they get going full speed).

There's a coolant sensor attached to the bottom of you radiator that regulates when the fans are supposed to come on. It should only allow voltage to get to the fans when the temperature reaches 180 degrees F.  You may want to remove that sensor and test it.  Of course, to check that sensor, you'd have to drain the coolant out of the radiator first.  The engine coolant temperature sensor (near the thermostat) should also be inspected.
Good luck!
