Mitsubishi Repair: 92 Laser 2.0 engine problem, haynes repair manual, haynes manual

Question
My som and I have been trying to repair his 2.0 engine. It started with a replaced head gasket  which was causing over heating. We replaced the head gasket, set all the timing marks according to the Haynes manual, all the valves and cam positions seem ok, replaced the spark plugs and wires, checked voltage at the plug for camshaft position sensor, and got 11.50 on pin 3   and only .55 volts on pin 2. there is no valves hit the pistons. The car was running fine when it was parked to work on. Any advice or points would be appreciated at this point.

Answer
Dale: Hello. The camshaft and carnkshaft postiion sensors on the 2.0L engine are combined into one unit. This sensor detects the piston position of each cylinder, converts the pulse signal and sends this to the computer. Then the computer determines the fuel injection firing order. So I would say you should replace that sensor or else your computer is going bad. The computers for your year of car has been known to go bad, a piece in them starts to leak and it slowly kills the computer. If the car was running you could take it to an AutoZone and they would code it for free. Other wise you will have to get a voltmeter, with your Haynes repair manual you will know what reading you should be getting; you will be able to find out if that sensor is bad or if the computer is the problem. Hope this helps and good luck. PS. I pulled this idea out of my Haynes repair manul on the pages called Emission and engine control systems.
