Mitsubishi Repair: service engine soon light, montero sport, autozone

Question
I own a 2001 Mits. Montero Sport XLS 4Whl drive and the service light came on @ 78,000 miles. Need to know if this is standard for the Montero at this mileage.

Answer
Cynthia: Got to say miles really has nothing to do with this. Though it does seem to happen with more miles. But if your computer picks up on something that is not right in your engine, it puts that service light on. You need to find a AutoZone as they will code your car for free and that will tell you what is going on with your car. Once you get the paperwork you can have it fixed someplace. Or find a shop that will code for free but then fix whatever is wrong. I got to say I don't know if that is standard for the Montero at this mileage. When is the last time you had the oil changed? Sometimes the service engine light will come on just for that, if you have been busy and not be able to get that done. Besides the fact that you drive a Montero, the miles but also it also is set up on how well you have taken care of the car. And again I am not saying you are not doing a good job, could be your bought this one used and then of course you have no idea how the last person took care of it. But still that service engine light is a good thing, it tells you something is not right and should be checked. Hope this helps and good luck!
