Mitsubishi Repair: check engine light 2003 Mitsu Galant, crankshaft position sensor, pulse signal

Question
I have a 2003 Mitsu Galant with 3.0 V-6 automatic 4 speed with about 165K miles.  The check engine light came on, and I noticed that the car "shudders" between 1500-2000 RPM and 35-45mph while in 4th gear.  It is the only time that the problem occurs.  I took the car to a local shop for free diagnostic, and the told me that the Check engine code told them it was a misfire in the #2 cyllinder.  Does this sound consistent with problem?  Also, I just had the car tuned up and plugs and wires changed in March of this 2006.

Answer
Greg:Could be this is a sensor that is out, it controls well tells the ECM, well it converts the pulse signal and sends the information to the ECM. From there the ECM determines the fuel injection firing order. So if the sensor is weak or going out that would be the shudders that you have noticed. And also the reason for the check engine light being on, the ECM has found something in the system that is not right. Now the cars I work on, that sensor is called the crankshaft position sensor which is in the distributor so you would have to replace the whole thing to fix that. But I don't know for sure on your car as it is newer. But I would take it to a shop and have them fix it. Because you have an air bag on your car and you have to be more careful working on such a car. Hope this helps and good luck!
