Mitsubishi Repair: Plymouth Colt Vista Transmission, plymouth colt, colt vista

Question
The automatic trans axle in our 1993 Mitsubishi Plymouth Colt Vista suddenly stopped working while we were traveling down the highway.

Just so happened that I checked the transmission fluid (for the very first time....started the engine, let it run, then ran the shift lever through each of the gears and back) two months prior to this happening and the dipstick showed absolutely no trace of fluid, so I went and added a quart.

Someone said to try dropping the transmission pan and replace the filter and fluid.

Someone else said simply to try adding more fluid.

While another said it might be a failed relay.

What do you think Linda?

Answer
Bill: Does not sound good to me. You did not say how many miles is on the car but being it is a 1993 I would guess a lot. When out on the highway did you by any chance hear a knocking noise before it stopped working? If so then the whole thing will have to be rebuilt because something has let go in the trans-axle. If not then I would try changing the filter and oil. To have a trans-axle rebuild you are looking around around $600.00 more or less.Unless you do it yourself. You really need to check those fluids better but then you know that. Could be a sensor out or a failed relay but don't think so. Running it with no oil was very hard on the trans-axle and with the miles just to much I would say. Hope this helps and good luck!
