Mitsubishi Repair: reasonable estimate on transmission work, mitsubishi 3000gt, transmission work

Question
I have a 1993 Mitsubishi 3000GT non-turbo and the transmission has just gone out. The specialist (referred by a mechanic I have known for years and trust implicitly) said their is no internal pressure and I definitely need a new transmission; the cost could go up to $1800. That's the cost he would give my friend with whom he does business. Just wanted to know if this sounds reasonable. I've owned the car for 7 yrs. and from what I've heard it sounds legit, but obviously I'm not an expert. I definitely want to keep the car. Any thoughts based on this limited info would be appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
Ruth,
$1800 is a reasonable price.  It actually sounds a little low, so verify the full estimate cost (including all parts and labor) for your car.  And usually these are not new transmissions; they are rebuilt ones.  Rebuilt is almost as good as new, but also be sure to verify if what they would use would be a rebuilt tranny or a used tranny.  Used ones could show problems after only a short time.
Good luck!
