Mitsubishi Repair: 1998 Mitsubishi Galant Transmission, mitsubishi galant, shift linkage

Question
My car is a 1998 Mitsubishi Galant, 2.4L, 4 Cyl, Automatic. My husband say's that the gears shift fine although it does take a bit when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd but it's driveable. The only problem is that it will not reverse. So we can move it forward and drive it (although we don't only to test drive it) except when we shift it on REVERSE it does nothing. Can you explain why it does this and what we need to look for to repair it.

Thanks a bunch. We would really appreciate any input.

Answer
Georgie,
Unfortuntely, there's not much you can do other than have a transmission shop inspect your transmission.  At best, your shift linkage may just be off, and needs to be adjusted.  But there's the possibility that your reverse gear is gone due to a broken band, ring gear, or servo.  This would require a transmission rebuild or replacement.  But it's best to have a mechanic inspect the problem for a proper diagnosis.
Good luck!
