Mitsubishi Repair: Should I fix my 1997 Mitsubishi Mirage, mitsubishi mirage, 1997 mitsubishi mirage

Question
I have a 1997 Mitsubishi Mirage LS Coupe w/ 128,000 miles on it.  I have maintained it according to the factory recommendations for the life of the car.  Minus a non-functioning air conditioner, the car was in decent shape overall.  The problem is when driving on the highway the other day, the tranny blew.  The car just revs when put into any gear.  A reputable shop in the area said it needs rebuilt and will cost 1600 plus tax.  Is this worth it?

Answer
Erik,
The tranny shop you brought your car to is right; the tranny most likely does need to be rebuilt and estimate they gave you of $1600 sounds right.  As far as the question of 'is it worth it' is completely up to you.  The value of the car with a functioning transmission is about the cost the tranny rebuild.  But a car without a working transmission is worth signifigantly less.

So if you really want to keep this car, I'd say have the transmission replaced.  Else, you may want to consider donating it to a charitable foundation (for example: The Kidney Foundation), who will offer you true market value for your car that you can deduct on your taxes for next year.  Most of these charities will tow your car away for free, and will accept it whether is can run or not.
Good luck!
