Mitsubishi Repair: 92 Talon Non-Turbo - Starting Problems, spark plug wires, esi model

Question
Hi Anthony,

I know you’re a busy guy, so I will try and keep it short.  I have a 92 Eagle Talon non-turbo and it just won’t start.  Through my research and tests I thought it was the fuel pump but it was actually the wiring to the pump that was faulty.  So that is fixed but it still won’t start.
The car is getting fuel as I can feel it flowing through the hose when trying to start but there is no sparks showing up.  I am going to go and do the voltmeter test that you suggested to another person with a similar problem.  But that is to test the ecm correct?  I also thought it may be the coil could that be a problem?  Can you tell me what to do 1st since I am not getting any sparks?   I know there is a huge wiring problem with the car but I am hoping that there is another solution to this.

Thanks
Trish

Oh one more thing can you tell me since the car is a non-turbo does that make my talon an ESI model?

Answer
Trish,
There were 2 models of non-turbo Talons in '92; an ES and a DL model.  The ES had the 2.0L engine and the DL had the 1.8L engine.

You do not need the voltmeter to inspect the ECM.  You'll just need to remove it and visually inspect it.  You can read more about it from here:
http://www.90gsx.com/eclipse/cap/caps.htm

If the circuitboard on the ECM looks damaged, it will need to be replaced.  It would also be good to have your timing checked.  If your timing is off, it will prevent your spark plugs from firing.  This can also happen if the crank angle position sensor is faulty.  If you have the 1.8L engine, you may just need to replace your distributor cap, distributor rotor, and spark plug wires.  But if you have the 2.0L engine, check your coil.  You can purchase a service manual for your at most auto parts stores that will help walk you through some procedures to test for your problem.

Inspect your MPI, alternator, and ignition fuses and make sure none are blown.  There are other items that could prevent your engine from starting, but try the ones I've mentioned first.
Good luck!
