Mitsubishi Repair: Check engine codes, mass air sensor, crank angle sensor

Question
I have a 95 Mirage, 1.5 l, automatic, 150k miles getting an intermitant check engine light (Only in warm weather).  I hear that I can get out the codes by shorting some leads in the computer conection.  Which leads do I need to short?  Also, where is the best blace to look up the codes.

Thanks

Answer
Dimitri,
In 1996 model cars sold in the US, the SAE changed the standard to use an upgraded on-board database for finding and pulling check engine codes.  But for cars manufacturer in 1995, some had the older OBD-I system, and some had the OBD-II  standard.  If your check engine light (CEL) is more or less flicking, it may just be warning you of a misfire.  This can be caused by a bad spark plug, plug wire, distributor cap, distributor rotor, the crank angle sensor,  the timing belt itself, or even the mass air sensor.  Usually, if any of these items are faulty, you'll detect a performance drop while you're driving.  Else, the problem is most likely an emissions problem.

Unless your CEL stays on constantly, it'll be difficult to pull any codes from the car's computer.  You can search online for Mirage trouble codes and I'm sure there is a site that will tell you what the codes mean.  You can also buy a service manual for your car with that information included.
Good luck!
