Mitsubishi Repair: instrument panel and squeaking, mitsubishi eclipse gs, 1998 mitsubishi eclipse gs

Question
1998 mitsubishi eclipse gs 2.0 automatic 89000 miles. I just bought this car and there is a squeaking around the timing belt. i checked the belt and it looks good if i put belt dresser on and around the belt it stops for about 10 minutes. i cant figure out what it is.
also i put a new cd player in and i accidentally touched the dimmer and illumination wire behind the cd player to a hot wire. i heard a pop under the steering column and checked all fuses in car but none were bad now my instrument panel lights, glove box lights, heating and air knob lights, and gear shifter lights dont work. now when i toch the illumination and dimmer wires to a hot wire all the lights listed above work until i turn my headlights on. if i could get some assistance that would be great and possibly a direct email address

Answer
Joshua,
For the squeaking around the timing belt, that can be very serious.  You may have a bad tensioner, bad idler pulley, or even a worn timing belt.  You should have this problem addressed immediately.  If your timing belt snaps while you're driving it, it'll bend most (or all) your valves and can damage your pistons.

As for your lighting issue, you may have blown out your instrument panel switch and/or your rheostat assembly.  A new rheostat assembly is only around $33 and that may take care of that problem.
Good luck!
