Mitsubishi Repair: 97 galant: hiccup, hesitation, radio shuts down, engine hesitation, pepboys store

Question
97 Galant ES, automatic.
While driving, I noticed that my radio would shut down for a few seconds then start back up. Other times, I experience the temporary radio shut down along with an engine hesitation. The hesitation feels like a lull in performance, idle. Sometimes the check engine light comes on while his happens, then the light disappears when I resume full power. Recently, the hesitation occurred while driving, and it was like a rhythmic hiccup. It reminded me of a fuel filter problem I had back in the 80s with my Buick. But would that cause my radio to shut down too?
I should disclose that about 8,000 miles ago, I experienced a check engine light regarding an EVAP leak. I changed the gas cap and reset the light, the check engine light hasn't come back on until now, but the light does not stay on.
Any thoughts? Thanks!

Answer
Shawn,
This is a classic sign of a failing alternator.  Most alternators last roughly 10 years, and yours is about that age.  If you have an AutoZone, Advnaced Auto Parts, or a Pepboys store in your area, you can bring your car there and ask them to load test your battery and test your alternator.  They provide this as a free service.  Odds are, your alternator is not putting out enough current or voltage to charge your battery properly.  And when your alternator reaches this point of failure, high wattage output device like you stereo will turn on and off as power is given and taken away.

So have your battery and alternator checked and replaced as needed.  This is also a good time to have your drive belts replaced as well if it's been more than 5 years or 40,000 miles since you last had them replaced.
Good luck!
