Mitsubishi Repair: car wont start, timing belt replacement, hydraulic tensioner

Question
I have a 95 eclipse 2.0 gs automatic.  We just had the ECU unit replaced.  Unfortunatly, then the water pump went out and due to our mechanic telling us this we had him replace the timing belt as well.  The car ran great for one day, then it would not start.  It is cranking however not turning over.  We thought possibly it was the battery so we replaced that as well.  Still it will not turn over.  We are now smelling gas.  Could it possibly be the fuel filter?  Please help, we are getting frustrated.  Thank you

Answer
Crystal,
The gas you're smelling is the fuel injectors being primed when you try to start our car.  I also suspect that your timing got thrown off.  Possibly because your mechanic did not tension your new timing belt correctly.  When your mechanic replaced your timing belt, he should have also replaced the hydraulic tensioner as well.  If that tensioner fails, your timing will get thrown off, and you will not be able to start your engine.  But because your fuel pump and injectors don't know that, it still despenses fuel into your cylinders, and that's why you're smelling the gas.  Unfortuntely because of that build up of unburnt fuel, that will foul your spark plugs and you'll most likely need those replaced as well.

The normal list of items that a mechanic should replace when doing a timing belt replacement are the main timing belt, the balance belt, hydraulic tensioner, and sometime the idler pulley.  Hopefully your mechanic torqued all the bolts down to spec during installation and reassembly.  Have your car towed back the mechanic that did the work for you with the timing belt.  Odds are the belt has slipped, broke, or the tensioner has failed.
Good luck!
