Mitsubishi Repair: 1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT auto transmission/quits, mitsubishi 3000gt, sporadic problems

Question
I am considering buying a 94 3000GT/3.0/non turbo/automatic transmission with 149,000 mostly highway miles. This car has had no major repair needs and is in very nice condition and is priced right. The problem is that some days you go out to take off and the transmission acts like it is not there at all and other days you out to take off and the tranni works fine. Is this possibly a bad electrical/power/computer connection or more likely an internal tranni issue?

Answer
Mike,
You should make a note as to the conditions under which it runs properly and when it seems to slip.  For example, has the car been sitting overnight, it is real cold out, is it rainy, hot and humid, after it's been driven for a while, etc...

This problem could be eletrical or mechanic.  An electrical problem may include a malfunctioning transaxle control unit (TCU).  This is the brain of the transmission, can cause sporadic problems like the ones you're seeing.

As for mechanical, this could be cause by a wide variety of items.  Check your fluid level.  If the transmission fluid and filter have not been changed within the past 40,000 miles, this could cause your problem.  The type of fluid is also critical in this car.  Be sure to use only the type as specified in the owners manual.  But if you want the best opinion before making this purchase, have it inspected first by a certified transmission shop.  They will be able to diagnose the problem more thoroughly, and help decide in your purchase decision.
Good luck!
