Mitsubishi Repair: 1990 Montero wont start, water remover, 4x4 auto

Question
1990 Montero LS, 4x4, auto. The car will not start at the beginning of the day without a squirt of starter fluid into the air cleaner. The rest of the day it starts perfect. When I try to start it the first time it will crank normally, I don't think it's getting fuel.
Any ideas?

Answer
David,
This problem can be contributed to simply having water accumulation in your gas tank.  When your car has been sitting over night, especially in the colder winter months, moisture via condesnation can accumulate in your gas tank, and if your fuel pump starts picking up fuel dilluted with enough water, you will not be able to start your car.  You can simply add a bottle of water remover to your gas tank at every fillup.  You can buy water remover at any store that has an automotive section, and of course any auto store.

Other things that can cause this problem are dirty throttle body, clogged fuel filter, dirty air filter, or a dirty EGR valve.  So, replace the fuel filter and air filter if it's been more than 2 years since you've replaced either of those, along with adding the water remover to your gas tank at every fillup.
Good luck!
