Mitsubishi Repair: 1994 Mitsubish Mighty Max Sudden Loss Of Power, crank angle sensor, e mail address

Question
    Anthony,

My 1994 Mighty Max has never had any problems of any kind except for the occasional dead battery, but today while running about 55 mph, the truck suddenly & without warning, experienced a sudden loss of power. When stopped, the engine turns over, but it seems as though no spark is going into the carburetor(of course, it is a fuel injector).  I have been reading your archives to learn if any similar questions have been asked, and I did see a couple that were similar, but not quite on the mark, however, the ones I read seemed to point toward the ECU.  I never smelled anything unusual however, which does seem to be one of the symptoms. If you think it may very well be the ECU, where is the ECU located on the 1994 Mighty Max Pickup & how easy is it to replace?  If not an ECU problem, what other problem could I be experiencing?  This Mighty Max has been a Great vehicle for me over the years, and I can hardly afford to have it fixed by a mechanic, so it would be nice if I could replace something myself if not too involved.  Thank you for your time, and I hope you have any answer to my problem.  If possible, please also send a solution via my e-mail address.

Answer
Patrick,
I've never had the opportunity to remove the ECU from a Might Max, so I wouldn't be able to definitively tell you where it is.  Though the most common places are behind the radio or under the glovebox.

Sudden loss of power can be caused by a number of things, and yes a malfunctiong ECU can cause it.  But faulty or worn out items like these can also cause loss of power:
- spark plugs
- plug wires
- distributor ignition/cap/rotor
- timing belt / balance belt
- cam/crank angle sensor
- PCV valve
- fuel pump
- fuel filter
- blown fusible links

And there are several more items that can cause this problem.  If you're able to find your ECU and it visually looks ok, then you may need to call on the help of a mechanic to help you out.  For some mechanics, they won't charge you much or any for diagnosing the problem.  Then, maybe you can find out your least expensive option to get it repaired.
Good luck!
