Mitsubishi Repair: 96 Mirage engine rattle sound, mitsubishi mirage, engine coolant

Question
I have a 1996 Mitsubishi mirage S automatic 1.5L About two days ago I started hearing a rattling sound from the engine compartment, which increases with intensity as the engine RPM increases.  I believe that the sound is coming from the Air Conditioning compressor.  Also I believe that this sound appears when outside temperatures are below freezing.

I want to remove the belt to the compressor so I can isolate it from the system and see if the sound stops, but I am not sure how to remove the belt.

Thanks. Ilian

Answer
Llian,
To remove the A/C belt, you'll most likely need to remove any other drive belts you have (power steering, alternator, water pump).  I would recommend getting a service manual to help guide you in a belt change if you wish to do this job yourself.

All engines make strange noises when temperatures get very cold.  You should make sure your engine oil is the correct viscosity and that you have enough. You should also be sure your engine coolant is full and that it doesn't look dirty.  If your rattling sound goes away after the engine as reached normal operating temperature, than your problem is probably a lubrication issue.  It's not a major problem, but be sure you're using the correct amount and type of oil.  It would also be a good idea to let your engine run for a few minutes on a cold morning before you start driving it.
Good luck!
