Mitsubishi Repair: ticking noise under passenger glovebox 1996 Galant S Automatic, transmission control unit, mitsubishi galant

Question
I have a 1996 mitsubishi galant S, with a 4 speed automatic and 2.4 liter I4. I am getting a weird ticking sound coming from under the passenger side glovebox. It is only when the car is on (or the keys are in and turned to the "on" setting) that i hear it. I checked under the hood to make sure, but it is definitely coming from inside the car. There is an airbag on that side, but it seems to be below that...i placed my hand on a box with the label "TRS" on it, and that seemed to be where the ticking was resonating from. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated-
Robert

Answer
Robert,
I'm not sure what the TRS stands for, but the area you are describing is where your ABS control unit is located.  This is the computer that activates your anti-lock braking system when your wheel start to lock up.  Other control units in that area are the engine control unit, the automatic transmission control unit, and the electronic power steering (EPS) control unit.  These are all little boxes that house the various computers that control specific system on the car and can cause ticking if they are continually resetting themselves due to malfunctioning problems.

But it's possible the ticking object is a bad relay, and that can be any number of relays, as many are located under the passanger side dash.  It's a good idea to have that looked at before it starts causing other problems.
Good luck!
