Mitsubishi Repair: HELP - 1992 3000GT wont start !, auto parts stores, starter relay

Question
I have a 1992 3000GT SL that won't start.  Finally, we were able to give it a push-start.  However, if I turn the engine OFF, I cannot re-start it.  I already replaced the STARTER RELAY and did not solve the problem.  I have two guesses right now: STARTER or ECM  Kindly advise on what I should do to fix the problem and get my 3000GT starting and running like a dream again.  I MISS DRIVING IT ALREADY !!!  THANKS ANTHONY. :-)

Answer
Joel,
If the engine does not turn over at all when you attempt to start it, you most likely have a bad starter motor.  If it turns over, but not strongly, then you could have a bad battery and/or bad starter.  You can have your battery load tested at most major auto parts stores for free (AutoZone, Advanced Auto, PepBoys).  They can even test your starter motor if you remove yours and bring it to them.

But if the battery is strong and the engine is also turning over strong, there is a possibility it could be your ECM.  Read this article for further information:

For a 13 year old car, its not uncommon to have the original starter motor replaced.  And your battery should have already needed to be replaced at least once.  And as your car gets older, it's gets more and more probable that your ECM will start to show signs of wear.  Check your ECM even if simply replacing the starter fixes your problem.  It's a good preemptive step.
Good luck!
