Mitsubishi Repair: 95 ECLIPSE GS AUTO, eclipse gs, fuel problems

Question
Hi Anthony,

I own a 95 Eclipse GS and over the last two weeks the car starting having fuel problems (I am guessing).  On the highway at higher speeds the car would spudder once or twice where it would seem like it was about to stall but would never get to that level.  I figured it was maybe bad gas so I filled it up with  94 Octane and it seemed to get rid of the problem.  However, on my last trip while making a turn the car completely stalled out.  I tried starting it for over 10 minutes.  It would crank, but not start.  After letting it sit for 15 minutes I tried again and it started.  I quickly drove it home, shifting it to neutral at stop lights so that the RPM's would never reach idle speed.  I now cannot start the car at all, again the same problem where it tries to turn over but cant.  Battery is at full strength what else can it be besides the fuel pump? and how do I test it for any problems before taking it to the mechanic?  Thanks for all your help

Frank

Answer
Frank,
For $10-$15, you can get yourself a Haynes or Chiltons service manual for your car.  That will have many procedures to troubleshoot your car's problems before taking it to a mechanic.  The problem you're describing is typical of a fuel problem.  It could be a weak fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, worn o-rings on your injectors, or even clogged injectors.  But other items like spark plugs, plug wires and timing should also be checked as well.  A Haynes or Chiltons service manual can fully described how to check all those areas.
Good luck!
