Mitsubishi Repair: 94 Eclipse belt replacement, tension bolt, tensioner pulley

Question
Anthony, My son's 94 Eclipse, 1.8, AC, 5-speed is chewing up alternator/waterpump/p.s. belt. Have had mechanic replace twice, now because of $ I'm trying it myself.  I'm trying to get the other (crank/AC) belt off so I can replace the inside belt.  On the other outside belt, I can't get the tensioner to loosen up the belt, adjustment bolt just screws back and forth, but no change in tension.  Can't get wrench on bottom bolt of tensioner.  Does it have to be loosened as well?  I can't see what it accomplishes. I'm desperate.  Thanks for a quick reply.  RB

Answer
Rod,
There are two nuts that need to be loosened on the AC tensioner bracket.  One is the tension bolt (on top I believe) and the other is the lock nut.  The lock nut must be loosened in order to allow to tensioner bolt to ease the tensioner pulley on the belt.

Another method that worked for me was to remove the tensioner bracket itself.  I believe there are 3 bolts that connect the tensioner to the block.  Just remove those three bolts, and remove the entire bracket.  Then, once off, you can see what the problem with the AC tensioner bracket is and of course you'll be able to remove the AC belt.
Good luck!
