Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): FH641V Kawasaki 21 HP Motor, vertical shaft, machinery manuals

Question
Eric,
I have in the past used all Kohler larger horse power vertical shaft engines.  Always had good luck with them.  This time I chose to get a new Exmark with a 21 HP Kawasaki on it.

I can't say too much good about the motor.  The day I brought it home and stopped a second to jabber with a neighbor it would not re-start.  This was something to do with ignition.

Right now it has two problems.  One it has always had, a very slow reacting governor.  It really has to bog down prior to the governor coming on line.

Second problem is it seems to have re-developed ignition problems.  Hard starting, crank, crank and crank some more.  It will finally start, then pop and fart around for a second or two, seems to start on one cylinder and then pick the outer one up.  It then runs fine till you turn it off and try to restart in after 5-10 minutes.  Same process again.  If you kill it and then restart it right away after it is hot it seems fine.

Unit is 3 year old and only has about 175 hours on it.

Any ideas.

Thanks Adam

Answer
Is the governer linkage binding?  I would start at the governor arm on the engine and check back to the carburetor.

Have you ever checked the valve lash?
