Mitsubishi Repair: 93 Mitsubishi 3000GT Door Latch problem, mitsubishi 3000gt, latch assembly

Question
Hello,

The passenger side door latch on my 93 3000gt keeps breaking. It is always the same thing, the little spring that actually locks the latch in the down position when the door is closed keeps breaking. I have replaced the latch 3 times already and now again , today, the new one broke. The first time it happened I paid a proffesional mech., and had them install it ... It lasted for about 3 hours. Since that time , I have been getting the part from the dealer , and installing it myself... This last one lasted about 3 months.
It is getting rather expenxive though as the latches cost around $78.00 a pop... What could make the latch keep breaking.. I know its not from slamming the door.. I have been very carefull as to tell people not to slam the door.
Thanks for your time, and I hope you can help me with this problem.

Answer
Donny,
If the strike plate or the latch assembly is not sitting correctly for them to lock properly when closed, it will put excess strain on the latch assembly.  The spring is one of the weakest parts of the latch, and probably be the first to break.  It's also possible the mounting bolts or even the bolt holes are worn down.  And if they are are worn down, the latch can move around slightly and cause it to not close squarely.

If you replace it yourself again, consider getting some new bolts with it.  It may help.
Good luck!
