Mitsubishi Repair: 1995 Mitsu Galant S Auto Trans Jerking & Stalling, mitsubishi galant, oxygen sensor

Question
1995 Mitsubishi Galant S, Automatic, 125K. My car has started to Jerk and Stall when I slow down, coming to stop.  It feels like I'm driving a manual when I come to stop without pushing in the clutch.  When it happens, I want to push in the clutch...but of course there isn't one because it's an automatic.  I have to put the car in Neutral for it not to jerk too violently and stall out.  Then I stop.  The car won't turn off while it's in Neutral.  But after I stop if I put the car back in drive, then the car will turn off (without jerking).  So I've just been putting the car in Park, turning the car off, then restarting the car.  When I do that, it runs fine again, until I come to another stop.  Some days it happens more than others.  Also, if I don't have to make a complete stop, when I try to accelerate again, the transmission seems to get stuck...I press on the gas but it's really hard to shift and it vibrates really hard (if I don't stop all the way and keep pressing the gas, most of the time it will get back into gear).  Do you have any idea what the problem could be?  I just had the timing belt, and water pump replaced about a year ago.  Besides from regular maintenance, I haven't really had any major work on my car.

Answer
Ellen,
You should consider a full tune-up if you haven't had any of the following items replaced in the past two years:
- Air filter
- Fuel filter
- Spark plugs
- Spark plug wires
- Distributor cap & rotor
- PCV valve
- Transmission fluid flush

Other items you should have checked are your fuel pump, alternator, battery, oxygen sensor and your catalytic converter.  If none of that helps, you may need to have a transmission shop inspect your transmission computer and torque converter.
Good luck!
