Mitsubishi Repair: Hesitation 1999 Galant (4clynder) auto trans, coolant temperature sensor, air fuel ratio

Question
After sitting for about 15 minutes, after the car has been driven and then parked, when you start the car and give it gas the engine bogs down and you really have to give it a lot of gas before it performs. Fuel Pump or Fuel Pressure regualtor? any idea?

Answer
Frank,
This problem could be caused by a malfunctioning fuel pump.  You can have that inspected by any mechanic, and having the fuel filter replaced is a good idea as well.  Replace your air filter the same time you replace your fuel filter.

You should also have your spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor inspected.  If none of those ignition components have ever been replaced on the car, this would be a good time to do so.  Also have your alternator and battery checked to be sure they are putting out appropriate voltage and current.  Make sure your transmission fluid level is full as well.

Another possible cause could be a faulty engine coolant temperature sensor.  If the car's computer thinks the engine's temperature is lower than it really is, it will alternate the air/fuel ratio and cause poor idle, slow acceleration, or even inability to start.  If your car seems to run fine after the engine is completely cooled down and then restarted, this sensor may be the problem.  But have all the areas I've mentioned inspected and keep up with the regular maintenance.
Good luck!
