Question
1986 mitsubishi tredia 2.o liter autonmatic....i was driving on the highway and something popped and i had been told earlier to get a cv joint replaced and that if it should break that the car would feel like the transmissions was bad but that it would be something else that drives the front wheel drive . the cars runs but i can not get it to go into any gear.....any info you have would be greatly appreciated ........victor register

Answer
Victor,
That 'pop' noise you heard, and the subsequent inability to shift into any gear can indicate a shift linkage problem.  This isn't too uncommon on a 20 year old car.  I would recommend having a transmission shop or the dealership inspect your cable linkages and replace them if necessary.  But your worst case scenario is that your transmission has a broken band or planetary gear.  If this is the case, you'll need a transmission rebuild.  Hopefully your problem is just the linkage.
Good luck!
