Mitsubishi Repair: 95 Eclipse GSX, manual, eclipse gsx, differential fluid

Question
Anthony,
My transmission locked up on me. (specifically the rear, i was told). I had it towed to a mechanic and he tells me that Mits did a recall on the trans. for this model/year. I looked on their website and cannot find any info about a recall done on this trans.  Is he pulling my chain?  If so, how can i find out?
Thanks, Jessica

Answer
Jessica,
There was indeed a recall on your car.  It's not your actual transmission, but your transfer case.  Your car is an All-wheel drive model, so your engine provides power to your front wheels and rear wheels.  So when your engine turns your transmission, the transmission provides power to your front wheels and your transfer case. And in turn, your transfer case provides power to your rear wheels.

The transfer case recall that Mitsubishi put out about 7 years ago noted that if your transfer case does not have adequate lubrication, it can lock up your wheels.  This recall was issued because this locking up actually caused a few fatalities.

A new transfer case is very expensive, and if you brought your car to a regular local mechanic, they will most likely charge your for the parts and labor to fix it.  I would highly recommend you call your local Mitsubishi dealership and ask for the Service Department.  Have your VIN number ready and ask them if your car has ever had this transfer case recall performed.  If the dealership says it has not been done, have your car towed to the dealership.  The dealership will install a new transfer case for free!

I would also recommend you have them replace your transmission fluid and rear differential fluid.  They may recommend you do this anyway.
Good luck!
