Mitsubishi Repair: Low rpm during stops and Stalls at Reverse, drive belts, timing belts

Question
MIT. Galant 1994, Automatic Transmission.

The issue is that whenever I shift to Reverse the RPM dives to about 100rpm until the engine stops, During Drive (D) the rpm falls at around 400rpm which is to low sometimes it falls and engine stops as well.

Answer
Rico,
This sounds like an issue you'll want a transmission shop to inspect.  It may be as simple as having your transmission fluid and filter replaced, or it may be something more serious  like having your torque converter replaced.  It sounds as though your transmission may be trying to go into the wrong gear for some reason.  But if it's been more than 40,000 miles since you last had your transmission fluid flushed and the filter replaced, it's a good idea to have it done.

There is a chance this could be an ignition or timing problem.  If you're in drive (D) at a stop, the RPMs start to go down, you then put it into Park (P) or Neutral (N) and the RPMs go back to normal, that could indicate your timing is off or you're getting an insufficient spark.  There is also a chance your fuel pump is starting to go bad.

On a car that's over 10 years old, you really want to keep up with the regular maintenance items.  Items like spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, drive belts, timing belts, and all fluids need to checked and replaced at regular intervals as indicated by your owners manual to ensure your car runs normally for a very long time.  Have a transmission shop check your torque converter and flush your tranny fluid.  And if your problem still occurs, take your car to a regular mechanic to get a full tune up.
Good luck!
