Mitsubishi Repair: 96 Eclipse CV Boot Leak, power steering fluid leak, cv joints

Question
I have a '96 Mits Eclipse. There seems to be a power steering fluid leak from the (outer?) CV boot. I hear that you have to replace the whole axle to fix it? A few questions...
1) Can I replace JUST the CB Boot or do I have to replace the whole axle?
2) If needed to replace either of those, is it something a novice/amateur can do?
3) Do I need any special tools or ''axle grease''?

Answer
Luke,
There is no power steering fluid in your CV boots.  What you're most likely seeing is the grease the CV joint is packet in, and it's leaking out.  It's not uncommon for the rubber CV boots to leak over time.  You can simply replace the outer CV boot.  Though if the inner boot also appears to be leaking or worn, and the axles look stressed, many times it can be cheaper to replace the entire axles because new CV joints and boots are already pre-installed.  But no, you do not need to replace the entire axle.  If the Joints and axles are in good shape, replacing just the boots is fine.

This typically is not a job for a novice/amature.  Unless you are very familiar with your car, you've done this job before under guidence, and you have a factory service manual, I would not recommend doing this job yourself.  But if you want to attempt it yourself, be sure you have the factory service manual.  A Haynes and Chiltons are good reference manuals, but not nearly detailed enough with torque specs and procedures to attempt this job.  You will also need tools like a breaker bar, special CV boot band clamp pliers, and possible a gear puller if your axles do not come out very easily.  And synthetic axle is the best to use when you re-pack your CV joints.

If you don't feel confident in doiing this yourself, don't feel bad about having a mechanic do it.  Having a pro do it will save you lots of time, stress, and even money if you were to mess this up yourself.  Plus, you'll most likely need a front end alignment after you complete this job anyway.
Good luck!
