Mitsubishi Repair: Bogging out, mitsubishi mirage, excess strain

Question
i recently purchased a 1990 mitsubishi mirage.i let the fuel get down to almost empty .i then filled up. later on that day it started to loose power during acceleration from a stop.this was after  approx: 20 min of driving.when given gas in park the car sounded great  but when in drive @ times it would loose power especially when drivenover about twenty minutes.i changed the fuel filter, air filter, and added gas treatment without any success.the fuel pump sounds good but i lack the expetise to truly confirm such a statemant.here is something i stumbled upon . i noticed that when it begins to bog out. that if i stop the car completely and restart it.it seems to reset itself for a little while.could it be the injectors please help .

Answer
Paul,
It's possible your fuel pump is starting to wear out.  When you ran it almost empty, that's puts excess strain on the pump.  If you let it run out of fuel (or close to it) it starts to pick up fine particles of debris from the bottom of your gas tank.  That can clog the fuel strainer that is attached to your fuel pump.  Also, your pump runs hot, and what cools it down is the fuel passing through it.  As it run dry, it can overheat.  I would have the pump checked by a mechanic and replaced if necessary.  A new pump from the dealership is about $350 and aftermarket pumps are around $150-$200.

You may also want to check your car's computer.  Read this article for further information:

If your ECU is starting to fail, you will have strange starting, idling, and stumbling problems.  But have your fuel system checked first.
Good luck!
