Question
hello, I have a 1995 eclipse gsx manual transmission. The car seems to have no power, especially going up a hill I have to go in 3rd gear just to go 30 mphs. Also the check engine light comes on sometimes, then it will turn off on it's own.Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Answer
Angie,
There can be a number of causes for this problem.  You should first have your fuel system inspected.  Have your fuel filter replaced, and your fuel pump, fuel injectors and fuel pressure regulator inspected to make sure they are functioning properly.  You should also replace your air filter if you haven't done so in more than a couple years.

Next, you'll want your ignition system inspected.  You should replace your spark plugs and spark plug wires every 30,000 miles or so.  There's a chance one of your cylinders is not firing properly due to lack of spark.  You may just need a regular tune-up.

But there's a chance your timing has slipped.  If you have not replaced your timing belt within the past 60,000 miles, you should have that done immediately.  If your timing has slipped, that can cause your check engine light to flicker. It will also cause your car to not perform as it should.   And even worse, if your belt breaks completely while driving, you could ruin your entire engine.

Have a mechanic check the items I mentioned, and replace any of the regular maintenance items as suggested.
Good luck!
