Question
hi, i have a 93 mitsubishi eclipse. every time i start the car it has a bad idle. if i step on the gas and let go the rpms go way down and the car turns off. also when im driving the lights dim,and flicker. i think that my problem is the alternator. is that correct.?

Answer
Spiro,
You are describing symptoms of a possible future alternator failure.  If the alternator that's in your car is the original from the factory, then odds are it will need to be replaced soon. The alternators Mitsubishi put in their Eclipse usually last about 10 years.

But if you have an AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts in your area, they can test your alternator for free.  Your alternator should be putting out around 65-75 amps (90 in Canada) and 14.5 volts @ 2000 RPMs.  Anything signifigantly less would indicate your alternator needs to be replaced.  But it's a common replacements and shouldn't cost you too much.  Have your battery load tested as well.  Bad alternators can kill even a new battery pretty fast.
Good luck!
