Mitsubishi Repair: electrical problem in 2003 diamante, power spikes, mitsubishi dealership

Question
Hi, I appreciate your time in helping me. My 2003 diamante has a short somewhere in the radio/interior lights/door lock circuit. It keeps shorting out,and the dealer has not been able to find the problem yet. It happens when the seat heaters are on, and either the radio or cd player on. The most recent incident happened as I was closing the passenger vanity light/mirror. Prior to this it seemed to occur as I turned off the radio or CD player. This has been happening since december 04. I am hoping you may have some ideas or heard of this before. Thanks

Answer
Sheila,
There's a good chance your car is still under it's general warranty, so you can take you car to the dealership and they'll probably fix it for free.  Just be sure you're still covered under your warranty before you have them do any work.

Seat heaters (as with any electrical heating element) requires large amounts of power.  If you have a bad connection or torn electrical wire going to your seat heaters, that can easily short out the rest of your interior electronics.  Sound systems also cause power spikes when turned on, and can also cause fuses to blow if there is a short in the system.

But definitely get the recommendation of a trained technician that's inspected your car.  It may be as simple as a loose connection of fraid wire.  If you have more than one Mitsubishi dealership in your area, visit them and have them look at it.  They may find something your other dealership overlooked.
Good luck!
