Mitsubishi Repair: Mitsubushi Galant Starter Problems, advanced auto parts, gil gil

Question
Hey Anthony,

I am having numerous problems with my 1994 Mitsubushi Galant.  Firstly, whenever it rains/is cold/ or snowed, it refushes to start.  Triple A folks now know my number from calling them so often.

Secondly, the power steering belt broke yesterday while trying to jump-start the car.  I lost control of the car two days in a row.  Thank goodness no body was hurt.  I sensed there was a problem with the power steering but wasn't sure what to do.

I know the car is old, but is there something I can do to repair these problems?  Or should I just think about getting rid of the car?

Thanks a bunch.

Gil

Answer
Gil,
Your cold/rainy/snowy starting problem could indicate a worn out starter problem, or possibly excess moisture build up in your fuel.  You should also have your battery load tested to see if it's still producing its rated cold cranking amps.  If have an AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts in your area, take your battery there and they can test it for you.  They do this for free.  If your battery checks out fine, check your gas cap.  The rubber gasket around it may be worn and allowing moisture to enter your gas tank.  Too much moisture will cause starting problems.  Get a bottle of some water-remover from your local auto parts store and add it to your gas tank during your next fill up.  That may help.  If it does, also replace your gas cap or just the gasket.  If neither one of those two quick fixes doesn't help, you may need to have your starter replaced.

If that power steering belt was the original belt that came with car, it's not surpising it broke.  Most belts are not even rated to last 10+ years.  I would recommend you replace all your drive belts (power steering, alternator, A/C) and think about getting your timing belt replaced if it's been on your car more than 65,000 miles.  Your car will last as long as you want it to, but you must keep up with the regular maintenace if you don't want to run into these little surprises.
Good luck!
