Mitsubishi Repair: 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder,..., california emissions, mitsubishi eclipse

Question
1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder, 2-door, manual transmission. 2.0 liter

Having trouble with the PCM. Engine lights keep coming on. First thought it ws alternator problem and replace it. Then thought it was the idle control motor and replaced it. Now it dies when at a stop and the engine light is back on. I think it is the ECU PCM. How much would it cost to buy and replace? What is a reasonable amount?  If it is simply a module could I just put it in myself or does it have to be programmed?

Answer
David,
The ECU is easy enough to remove and install yourself.  It should be located behind your radio.  A new ECU from the dealership would run you between $640-$800.  The part number should be written right on the case of your ECU for verification.  If you order a new one from the dealership, have your VIN ready so they can match exactly the ECU that you need.  The Spyder had a few different configurations; hence like a few different ECUs.  There's a 2.4L and a 2.0L engine.  The 2.4L engine was in the GS (non-turbo) models and the 2.0L engine was in the GS-T (turbo).  Now, depending on where you live and your emissions regulations, your car either has Federal emissions or California emissions, that too will determine what ECU you can use.  Finally, the ECU are again different between manual and auto transmission models.  So, if you do not go through your dealership to purchase a new ECU and you find an aftermarket vender, be sure to give them all this information.
Good luck!
