Mitsubishi Repair: Clutch fluid leak, clutch fluid, clutch cylinder

Question
98 Mit Eclipse 2.0L GST, manual.

Anthony,

I have been slowing (refill about once every 6 months)losing clutch fluid and finally determined source of leak.  The leak is occuring inside the car on the floorboard where the rod that is connected to the clutch pedal goes thru the firewall to the engine compartment of the car.  Can I repair this myself?  What is needed?  Thx.

Answer
Scott,
Sounds like a leak in your master clutch cylinder.  The master clutch cylinder is what that rod that goes through the firewall is connected to.  It's not uncommon for a seal or o-ring to bad over time.  If you have a service manual for your car (both Haynes and Chiltons make one for your car), some time and some basic ratchet tools, you should be able to fix this yourself.

You can pick up a clutch repair kit at any Mitsubishi dealership.  They cost around $30.  Part #MB870511 .  But if it turns out that your entire master clutch cylinder is bad, you can get a new one from the dealership for about $80-$100. Part #MB910562.  But usually the repair kit will fix your leak.

Your service manual will also tell you how to bleed the air out of your clutch lines after you've finished the repair.  You may need a second person to help you with that.
Good luck!
